What Happened Recently?
Recently The International
Cover of Time Magazine features our PM Narendra Modi, but it says INDIA’S
DIVIDER IN CHIEF. Now about “Divider In Chief” Word, many discussions have been
taking place, how a foreign media outlet points out such a word about our PM?
Lots of controversies arrived in the social media. The word DIVIDER IN CHIEF is
not that unique and exclusively written about our PM, but it was used initially
for President Donald Trump. Since 2016 Trump came into power, many social Medias
like CNN, The Washington Post, The Time points him as a DIVIDER IN CHIEF because
they think Trump is dividing USA in the name of religion, caste and color. Why
only DIVIDER IN CHIEF?, that’s because according to the US Constitution, The
president is the Commander In Chief of Army, Navy and Air force but in India,
Mr. Narendra Modi is not the president of India, It’s just a copy paste job. Overall it’s not
relevant to the title.
Why Time Magazine Important?
The latest version
features our current PM, but from the past records, it’s not new. Whatever Time
Magazine features, the whole world discuss on the topic.
Is Narendra Modi India's Divider In Chief? |
From the Above picture, In
2012, The then PM of India Mr. Manmohan Singh, featured Time Magazine
front cover, with title of “THE UNDERACHIEVER”, that means he could do
more in reforms. When Rohingyas were under threat in Myanmar, The Time featured
a Buddhist leader with the title of “THE FACE OF BUDDHIST TERROR”, due
to this many controversies held in Myanmar, how could anyone called Buddhist a
terrorist? So after some examples it is clear that whatever Time Publishes, its
been a hot topic to be discussed in all over the world.
The TIME Magazine Article
The article is written by
Aatish Taseer, british born writer-journalist, and son of Indian Journalist
Tavleen Singh and late Pakistani politician and businessman Salmaan Taseer. Now
as his father was from Pakistan, doesn’t mean that he is also anti Indian.
The cover story, written
by novelist Aatish Taseer, has the headline: “Can the world’s largest
democracy endure another five years of a Modi Government?” As the title
suggests it contains an anti-modi government ideologies.
Taseer starts his article
saying that in 2014, India became the “first of the great democracies to
fall to populism”. The article says that Modi’s ascension in 2014 showed
that “beneath the surface of what the elite had believed was a liberal
syncretic culture, India was indeed a cauldron of religious nationalism,
anti-Muslim sentiment and deep-seated caste bigotry”.
Taseer describes Modi’s
record on women’s issues as “spotty”. He also criticizes the appointment
of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh ideologue S Gurumurthy to the
board of the Reserve Bank of India, and calls Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Adityanath
a “hate-mongering priest in robes of saffron.” Taseer describes the
candidature of Malegaon blasts accused Pragya Singh Thakur in the Lok
Sabha election from Bhopal as an example of “the spectre of extreme
nationalism and criminality” becoming inseparable.
Modi is right to
criticize an India in which modernity came to be synonymous with
Westernization, so that all those ideas and principles that might have had
universal valence became the preserve of those who were exposed to European and
American culture. What Modi cannot-or will not-do is tell India the hard truth
that if she wishes to be a great power, and not a Hindu theocracy, the medieval
Indian past, mired in superstition and magic, must go under.
On Congress—India’s
oldest party – he said it has no more political imagination than to send
Priyanka Gandhi – Rahul Gandhi’s sister – to join her brother’s side. It would
be equivalent to America’s Democratic Party fielding Hillary Clinton again in
2020, with the added enticement of her daughter Chelsea as Vice President.
“Modi is lucky to be
blessed with so weak an opposition – a ragtag coalition of parties, led by the
congress, with no agenda other than to defeat him. Even so, doubts assail him,
for he must know he has not delivered on the promise of 2014. It is why he has
resorted to looking for enemies within,” he wrote.
OUR VIEWS
Is Narendra Modi India's Divider In Chief? |
We want to say that Time
magazine is not anti-Indian or they have done one sided criticism, but yes the
cover page is a bit controversial. May be it has done intentionally, to get
attention of the world. But There is also another article which titles “Modi
the reformer” by Ian Bremmer headlines “Modi is India’s Best Hope for Economic
Reform”, that explains if Modi gets reelected, India’s Reform will keep on
increasing. Both the articles are mentioned in the cover page.
That's all for today.
