What Recently Happened?

The US has approved the sale of 24 multi-role #MH-60 ‘Romeo’ Sea hawk helicopters to India at an estimated cost of $2.6 billion, i.e., approx 18,000 crore.

The Lockheed Martin-built helicopters are designed for hunting submarines, targeting ships, and conducting search-and-rescue operations at sea.

‘Romeo’ Sea Hawk Helicopters

It is considered the world’s most advanced maritime helicopter. The helicopters are currently deployed with the US Navy. These helicopters would replenish India’s aging fleet of British-made Sea King helicopters.
This will give an edge to our Indian Navy. These technology is not used in the peacetime, but widely to be used in warfare times. As recently when our MIG’s were falling, during India-Pakistan Air force combats, Even India's PM Mr. Narendra Modi said, “If we had Our state of art Rafael aircraft at that time, the result might be different than what happened”.

Basic Powers: Able to deploy aboard any air-capable frigate, destroyer, cruiser, fast combat support ship, amphibious assault ship, or aircraft carrier, the Seahawk can handle anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASUW), naval special warfare (NSW) insertion, search and rescue (SAR), combat search and rescue (CSAR), vertical replenishment (VERTREP), and medical evacuation (MEDEVAC).

History

WHY INDIA NEEDS MH-60 ROMEO ?
P-8 Poseidon
On 4 January 2009, India’s Ministry of Defence signed a US$2.1 billion agreement with Boeing for the supply of eight P-8I Poseidon to replace the Indian Navy’s aging Tupolev UTu-142M maritime surveillance turboprops.
In July 2016, it was confirmed India had ordered another four P-8Is that will be delivered by 2020.

Why India Needed It

The Navy is desperate to induct the MH-60Rs because its warships are virtually bereft of such helicopters at a time when Chinese nuclear and diesel-electric submarines are making regular forays into the Indian Ocean Region. Overall, Chinese ships have been passing through the Indian Ocean and increasing their coverage in that region.

A Sad State Of Affairs

As per a report by Naval Analyses, India has 15 conventional submarines (SSKs), two nuclear-powered submarines (SSBNs) and one nuclear powered submarine (SSN) INS Chakra.
In terms of both quantity and technological advancement, China’s submarine fleet drastically outperforms India’s. The Dragon has a total of 78 submarines, which include six advanced JIN-class SSBNs armed with missiles with a range of 7,200 km. Besides, China has 14 nuclear-powered submarines and 57 conventional ones.

The Future

Estimates of the number of helicopters needed by the Indian armed forces over the next 10 years vary from 1,000 to 1,200. While it promises to be a lucrative market for global manufacturers, it is also one that is uncertain. Negotiations with the US for the multi-role helicopters began 15 years back. It is only now that it appears to be in the realm of the real. But the MH-60 ‘letter of request’ also comes after India has contracted 22 Apache 64D (Lockheed) attack helicopters, the first of which is expected in April, and 15 Chinook (Boeing) heavy lift machines, which are expected later in 2019.

COMCASA Factor

COMCASA refers to Communications Compatibility and Security Agreement. Recently, India and the US have set up the first ever secure communication link between the naval headquarters here and the US Central as well as Pacific Naval Commands under the landmark Ind-US COMCASA pact.

Our Views

The defence equipment are not just to show our powers, but we never know, when we need this. At the time of emergency we are going to need all that state of the art defence equipment doing combat, in the warfare times, either may be Rafael or MH-60. India is a very peaceful country and will use its powers very wisely. Hope peace for the future.

That's all for today, Thankyou for reading
